Audio-Visual Library The Mental Health Association of Franklin County is pleased to provide a free mental health lending library, available for use by anyone in Franklin County. Our video and audiotape library covers a wide range of mental health and recovery topics including depression, self-esteem and stress management. As you look over our listings, you will find selections appropriate for all ages. Our library is an invaluable resource to teachers and guidance counselors, mental health and recovery services' professionals, business personnel, employee assistance professionals, clergy and the general public. Persons with mental illness and their families will also find topics of interest. Please feel free to contact us about your program needs, ideas and suggestions. We want to be responsive to the mental health educational needs of our community. To increase the usability of our library and to expand the selection of videos available, we collaborate with the Prevention Council of Central Ohio and the Columbus Health Department Resource Center. The Center is a comprehensive media center with topics on alcohol, drugs, mental health, and health in general. Center staff also perform Internet, literature, magazine and statistical information searches and prepare background on most alcohol, drug and social issue topics. Request a catalogue of materials

Against Violence Everywhere Awards (1999; Sr. High/Adult) Eight videos
written and performed by teens offer alternatives to violence in realistic
situations. Each video is no longer that four minutes. About Job Stress
(1991; Adult; 18 min.) This video addresses common job-related stresses
from all types of jobs including workplace conditions, deadlines, promotions
or added responsibilities on the job due to reduction in the workforce.
Offers practical suggestions on how to control stress and avoid job burnout.
About Young People
and Self-Esteem (1991; Jr/Sr High/College; 18 min.) This video raises
teens' awareness of their special qualities, and promotes the power of
positive thinking. Contains a mix of lively animation and interviews with
teens and experts that address specific concerns of young people. Topics
include friendships, social development and meaningful relationships at
school and home. About Young
People and Stress (1991; Jr/SR High/College; 19 min.) This video shows
that stress does not discriminate by age. Young people are susceptible
to its effects, and may be tempted by unhealthy methods to control it.
This video specifically advises against using drugs or alcohol to "tune
out" problems. After the Tears
(1986; SR High/Adult; 20 min.) Teens and adult siblings share their feelings
about having a family member with a mental illness. Beating the Blues
(1998; Adult; 30 min.) Tony Dow (Wally Cleaver from TV's Leave It To Beaver)
talks about his personal struggle with depression. The Blues: Not
A Normal Part of Aging (1998; Adult; 22 min.) A community education
program on clinical depression in the older adult population. This video
profiles three individuals who share their stories on successful battles
with clinical depression in later life. Speaker's manual available. Borderline Syndrome:
A Personality Disorder of Our Time (1988; College/Adult; 74 min.)
A documentary/training video on Borderline featuring experts in the treatment
of this diagnosis. Footage of in-depth conversations with patients is
also included. The video features Drs. James Masterson and John Gunderson,
recognized authorities in the diagnosis and treatment of this disorder.

treatments for persons with serious mental illness. Produced as part of
the National Mental Health Association's Partners In CARE program. Six
model programs for effective community-based services for persons with
severe and persistent mental illnesses are outlined. Child Molestation:
Breaking the Silence (1987; Adult; 20 min.) Good in-service for school
personnel. Through a dramatic presentation, viewers see issues a child
faces in sexual abuse situation. Includes pre-test and sample situations
for discussion. Claire's Story:
A Child's Perspective on Childhood Depression (1994; Grades 5-9; Part
I, 20 min., Parts II & III, 30 min.) Thirteen-year-old Claire narrates
her own experience of depression. Claire, who was diagnosed at the age
of 11, addresses the facts and fiction of depression along with an adult
narrator. Includes teacher's guide with reproducible handouts for use
in the classroom, meetings, or to send home to parents. Dark Glasses
and Kaleidoscopes: Living with Manic Depression (1997; SR High/Adult;
30 min.) Produced for the National Depressive and Manic Depressive Association,
this video features actor Tony Dow, who played Wally Cleaver on the TV
program, Leave it to Beaver. This video is intended to describe the illness
and provide possible treatments. Day After Night: Recognizing Teenage Depression (1999; 26 minutes) Explores teenage depression, its symptoms and treatment options. The true stories of several teens and their battles with clinical depression are featured. that chronicles the lives of three people suffering from depression and
their families. Featured are Mike Wallace, from 60 Minutes, author William
Styron and clinical psychologist Martha Manning who have learned to live
with the illness. Depression: A Changing
Perspective...Reaching Out (1994; Adult; 14 min.) Produced by the
National Institutes of Mental Health, this video features celebrities
and public figures who overcame depression through treatment. Also presents
vignettes which reinforce essential information and capture real life
experiences. Included with the video is an educational guide for presenters.
Depression and
Manic Depression: Real Stories/Real Hope (1998; Adult; 42 min.) This
video was created for National Depression Screening Day '98 and offers
individual vignettes that feature a wide variety of ages, sexes, and ethnic
diversity. Treatment options described include medication, psychotherapy
and self-help groups. Depression and
Women: Dispelling the Myths (1995; Adult; 16 min.) Features the inspiring
profiles of five women, ranging in age from 18 to 80, who share their
stories of their successful battles with depression. Produced by Eli Lilly
& Co. for the NMHA's public education campaign on clinical depression. Depression in the
Workplace (1988; Adult; 20 min.) Helps supervisors and managers recognize
depression as a possible factor in performance-related problems. Offers
helpful suggestions on how to approach an employee who may be experiencing

Depression: The
Road to Recovery (1992; Adult; approx. 15 min.) Patient education
video on Prozac produced by Eli Lilly and Company. Discovering An
Untapped Work Force (1988; Adult; 13 min.) Markets the abilities of
persons with disabilities. Features success stories shared by workers
with disabilities and their employers. Although appropriate for in-service
training session for agencies that work with people with mental illness
and other disabilities, this video is targeted to potential employers.
Don't Pop Your
Cork on Mondays! (1991; Grades K-4; 13 min.) This video provides children
with an understanding of stress and the importance of developing stress
survival skills in a bright, humorous, animated format. Downtime: A Worksite
Guide to Understanding Clinical Depression (1993; Adult; 25 min.)
Narrated by Dick Cavett, this video offers practical advice to employers
on how to recognize depression in the workplace and what to do about it.
Everybody Needs
a Hand to Hold On To (1995; Adult; 18 min.) Narrated by Walter Cronkite,
was produced by the National Depressive and Manic-Depressive Association
with a grant from Eli Lilly & Co. For those who suffer from a depression-related
disorder, this video provides comfort and hope. The video shows how treatment
can help restore people to productive, satisfying lives. Expectations: A
Story About Stress (1985; Grades 3-6; 22 min.) Dramatized story which
illustrates that stress can come from a variety of sources. Shows a young
boy and girl dealing with stress successfully. Faces of Anxiety
(1990; Adult; 28 min.) This video follows Gary Tollefson, MD, PhD, as
he sees his patients with anxiety disorders (phobias, panic attacks and
obsessive-compulsive disorders). The viewer learns about a variety of
treatment options - behavior modification, psychotherapy, coping techniques
and medication - and begins to understand that persons with anxiety disorders
