Research: Federally Funded Research Studies on Rx Effectiveness
In the past year, several prestigious medical journals have
published the findings of a series of federally-funded, largest-of-their-kind
studies on the effectiveness of certain mental health medications for the
treatment of mental illnesses. Each study is being released in a series of
phases. These National Institute of Mental Health-backed studies include:
The findings of CATIE, STAR*D and STEP-BD will ultimately help
consumers and clinicians make more informed choices about which treatment is
best for each individual and his/her unique characteristics and needs.
Unfortunately, this research, if misinterpreted and misapplied, could spur
states and other health care payors to restrict access to many needed treatments
for people with mental illnesses.
To help improve understanding of the study findings and their potential
implications, Mental Health America has created educational materials on each
respective study. Mental Health America and its nationwide network of affiliates
also continue to educate state decision makers, health care payors, providers
and the public on these landmark studies. |
